If your laptop is running Windows 98 it will not automatically detect the wireless network unless you have installed software that performs this task. To connect to the network you will need to change your network settings. Don't worry - it's not difficult. The following instruction will guide you through the process.

If you are using an external Wi-Fi (wireless LAN) adaptor, for example a PCMCIA wireless card, a USB adaptor or a Compact Flash adaptor, make sure that it's plugged in. Then press the Windows button on your keyboard or the Start button on the taskbar to bring up the Start menu.

Wi-Fi setup Win 98 Network Properties

The next thing you will see is the Network box.

In the top section of this the different types of network hardware that are part of your PC will be listed. One of these will be described as a Wireless LAN. (The full description will vary depending on your specific hardware).

Click once on this to select it, and then click on the Properties button beneath it.

This brings up the detailed settings box for your Wireless LAN hardware. (The name at the top of the box reflects your specific Wi-Fi adaptor).

Click on the Settings tag. You will see a box called Wireless LAN Service Area. The name entered here is the name of the network that your PC will look for.

If there is a name in the box MAKE A NOTE OF IT. You will need to repeat this procedure when you get back to your normal network by re-entering this name.

Wi-Fi in Edinburgh's Royal Mile

In the Wireless LAN Service Area box type the word royalmile. It is important that this is in lowercase letters and that there is no space between royal and mile. Otherwise it will not work.

Once you have done this click OK on each box. You may be asked to reboot your PC before the changes take effect.

Your PC should now be able to connect to the Wireless Access point.

You should not need to make any other changes for Internet access. Just use your PC as you would with your normal network or wireless connection.

You can make unlimited use of the Internet free of charge.
