Rather than hit the Internet, you can collect a good range of guides from the Edinburgh Tourist office above Waverley Rail Station, at the Hub at the bottom of Castle Hill, or at the Tron Church at the crossing of the Royal Mile and North Bridge. Alternatively, the following links let you search out the major attractions from the comfort of your Internet connection.

These are the links we find most useful on a regular basis. If there are some you think are missing, please let me know by clicking here.

Restaurants & Food

On the principle that restaurants should concentrate on food and not on web sites, the following list is a set of links to guides and recommendations rather than sites for individual restaurants. Remeber that restaurants come and go, so check first if you're travelling any distance.

Before we start, there are a few extras for the food and drink lover.

Farmers' Market every first and third Saturday on Castle Terrace. Tasty.

Whisky Heritage Centre

The Cook's Book Shop run by Clarissa Dickson Wright (half of the "Two Fat Ladies"

Edinburgh's Pubs An independent guide

Now for the guides. To the best of my knowledge all of the following are independent reviews and selections unless otherwise stated...

Laboratory for the Foundations of Computer Science A totally independent list and guide. START HERE - it's the best.

Fine Wine Diary Another excellent personal guide to eating out and food shops

Bare Ingredients Personal reviews covering Edinburgh, London and Skye. Recommended.

The three above provide a pretty comprehensive guide to where to eat. If you can't find what you're after in them, you can try:

Cruelty Free Vegan friendly eating places

Veggie Heaven Fuller descriptions, but fewer restaurants

The Oracle Thorough list, but no reviews

Taste of Scotland An organisation that used to award good Scottish cooking

Rampant Scotland Guide to restaurants and scottish food in general

The List

Scottish Restaurant review Limited number of reviews, but honest.

Edinburgh Restaurateurs' Association Good restaurants, but obviously not independent reviews.

Edinburgh Food Guide - has consistently superlative reviews. Which makes me suspicious.
